What’s the secret to upscaling successfully?

Everyone in Denmark’s robotics industry has heard of Universal Robots and OnRobot. But what’s the secret behind their growth? Enrico Krog Iversen shared his secrets to upscaling successfully last week at the first masterclass in the Global Growth Robotics programme.
“Upscaling your business is all about having a strong plan, a strong team and very focused execution. You also need luck and timing, but people with good plans tend to be luckier than people without plans. That’s my philosophy,” says Enrico Krog Iversen, CEO of OnRobot.
Drawing on his experience as CEO of OnRobot and Universal Robots, Iversen shared his key learnings with robotics, automation and drone startups/scaleups participating in Global Growth Robotics. Through workshops, masterclasses and individual sessions with a personal growth coach, companies develop their very own roadmap – learning from top industry experts.
Here are Iversen’s top tips to upscaling successfully:
- Expand your global presence gradually. You can’t claim all your dream markets at once. So make a plan and a timeline for which countries and regions you want to reach.
- Focus, focus, focus. Stay focused and concentrate your efforts on just a few activities at the one time. If you try to focus on too many, you’ll miss traction.
- Make yourself visible. Book meetings with big established companies and use it as a way of generating PR. The meetings might not generate sales, but can generate valuable press coverage that can build your reputation in the market.
- Get things done. Less talking, more doing. Scaling up is about making decisions and acting fast.
- Open communication. It’s much easier to run your business if you can talk about problems openly and people aren’t afraid of bringing things to the table. Also, clear open communication makes it easier to communicate across cultures. Getting something done ‘now’ is understood differently in Denmark than in other countries.
- No feature selling – only value selling. Ask yourself two questions: How does this task create value for our customers? And how does it create value for our company? If you’re in doubt about the answer, you can probably bin your idea.
- Be hungry. Make sure your employees and C-level team are hungry for success. And be willing to go to new limits and make risky decisions, even when all the information isn’t available.
- Have a common goal. Setting a common goal is a great way of getting everyone to move in the right direction. Once you start communicating it, you commit yourself and the company to making it happen.
